March 1 - 31, 2008 Sang Roberson
"Leaf Bowl," , $4,400 Sang Roberson's burnished, soft-shouldered, lidded containers blend the definitions of boxes and vessels. The terra cotta containers are hand-built from slabs of clay or slip-cast, then painted with terra sigliata (a fine slip of clay, soda ash and water) and after the bisque firing, burnished with a soft cloth. Following another two firings, the pieces are pit-fired with hay and sawdust. The subtle, earthily refined forms and surfaces of Roberson's containers have often been referenced to Asian ceramics. She also acknowledges the influences of the Pueblo Indians with their burnished surfaces and the pre-Columbian ceramics of Colombia which are reflected in her slab constructed basket forms. |
